Hi everybody. this may be my gt.grandaddy. Its about the fifth one I`ve tried. If I`m wrong again I will believe gran came from outer space and give up. 1861 census. St. Osyth, Essex Dist. 10. Thomas Pope aged 9 scholar. It is the place of birth I cant make out. Transcription reads NK. Cambrideshire. To me first letter looks like U dont know about second one. Any one got better eyesight or good at translating old letters. If it is NK. what does that stand for? Many thanks. Sylvia. |

NK is Not Known However, I would say that the first of the letters is a 'U'............. Reg |

I don't think it is N.K. (Not Known). It looks like U.N. to me. If you look a bit further up the page there is a family with the surname Norman, and the first letter in the name Norman looks like the last letter in Thomas's birthplace. Kath. x |

Thank you Reg and Kath. It is possible it says uk meaning unknown or un unknown if enumerator couldnt spell. This may be of help as a previous suspect was born in March Cambs. So I will follow that lead. Sylvia. (enough searching for today the fF.A. cup just about to start!) |
