If someone is listed in the directories, with no occupation by their name - is it safe to assume they had a private income? |

It depends upon whether it was a residential directory or a trades/commercial directory. But I've found thatit's the more likely that just posh folk are in the street sections. So I haven't found my pleb rellies when I know they were living in the road and year I've found in a directory. Best to use a census to see. I also think some people would be listed in residential area and also trades/commercial/business area if they didn't work from their home - which implies a bigger income than those who lived 'above the shop'. nell |
