Been there done that Glen. You have to learn to decipher grunts and shrugs, but it gets better - then theres acne - followed by being awake half the night wondering why they're not back from an evening out. My brother says that stage is worse than when they're babies cos at least then, when they keep you awake half the night at least you knew where they were! |

Yes Glen I wondered that and the frustrating thing on this census is you can't see where they are as theres no address. Perhaps he'd had a sulk and they went out leaving him on the playstation hey, after all 14 is a funny age!! |

Mmmm Maybe he wasn't living alone, just alone when the enumerater called round. My lot are always visitors in the later years, usually father at one place with some of kids and mum elsewhere with some of the others, the rest of the kids dotted round the uncles and aunts. Glen |

Jennifer according to the 1841 census there are 6 Benjamin Kidger's in Leicestershire, the one I posted above is the only 1 in the age bracket to be George's father. Also according to the IGI his mother was Mary so all this info put together point to the correct Benjamin. Georgina. |

Yes thats the Benjamin I can find, and the one I want to be his father as thats the one I've got the line back to 1650. The other Benjamin it could be was born in Shepshed, not a million miles from Thorpe Acre with quite a few Kidgers so probably all inter related. I don't understand why hes living away from home (I'm sure he was really only 12 as on all other census) |

Jennifer it looks like he is a servant in another household as Angela said, but I think these are his parents in 1841... Benjamin Kidger abt 1791 Leicestershire, England Thorpacre Leicestershire Eli Kidger abt 1835 Leicestershire, England Thorpacre Leicestershire Mary Kidger abt 1786 Leicestershire, England Thorpacre Leicestershire Mary Kidger abt 1826 Leicestershire, England Thorpacre Leicestershire William Pickering abt 1840 Leicestershire, England Thorpacre Leicestershire Source information: HO107/596/11 Registration district: Loughborough Sub-registration district: Loughborough ED, institution, or vessel: 18A Folio: 4 Page: 9 (click to see others on page) Line number: 4 GSU Number: 438746 Georgina. |

It could be male servant but wouldn't the members of the family he was servant to be listed with him. Hes totally on his own. The odd thing is, one of the Benjamins is on the 1841 living with the rest of the family and the other Benjamin and family aren't on the census at all. As they were all on the 1851 census I know they can't have died (seems logical anyway!!!) |

MS would probably stand for something Servant (like Male Servant). |

Just looked at the 1841 census. I knew my great great great grandfathers name was Benjamin and there was only two it could be. One of them I had the line right back to 1650. As my great great grandad George was born in 1829 I thought I would nail it with the 1841 as he would be living with parents. Guess what, instead of age 12 it says hes age 14 and he's living on his own. So disappointed.. By the way it looks as if is occupation reads M S. Would anyone know what that would mean |
