1. lay in the paracemol 2. the 1841 census does not give place of birth only county. 3. ages for adults were rounded down to the nearest 5 years. 4.. addresses are given as Parish and county. This can be confusing for towns. e.g. I found St. Phillip and St. Jacob Gloucestershire for the centre of Bristol. 5. The census does not give relationships.

Buy yourself the biggest monitor you can afford. (As you may be able to tell my eyes are going ga ga! ) Try and get yourself into the parish and then browse the pages, Some of the names I have found are not coming up on the search index.

I shall need this info, so will store it here For the 1841 census parishes were organized into hundreds (and into (i) wapentakes in Lincolnshire and Yorkshire) rather than registration districts as in the later censuses. The 1841 census returns were organized alphabetically according to county, hundred, and parish names. Consecutive piece numbers were assigned to hundreds or parts of hundreds for reference purposes. You will find the piece number on a paper strip on the side or bottom of every image, following the PRO class number (HO 107). There may be hundreds of pieces within a county. (i)A wapentake is a term derived from the Old Norse, the rough equivalent of an Anglo-Saxon hundred. The word denotes an administrative meeting place, typically a crossroads or a ford in a river where attendance or voting would be denoted or conducted by the show of weapons

Btw, counties of birth are only given if the person answered 'Yes' to the question 'Born in county?'. If they answered 'No' then no county of birth is given. Therefore if your rellie was not in his birth county, it will be nigh on impossible to find them. Liz.

Each new house is indicated by the number 1. A single line under an entry indicates another household in the same building. Double underlining indicates the end of the house. This system sometimes go to pot, but it can help sort out relationships or lack of them.
