David Report 19 Apr 2006 20:53

According to family members, and a passing reference in the local paper of the day, my uncle, David James Evans, b 1st May 1892, d 14th June 1923, married a Russian bride whilst in the Royal Navy and taking part in the Caspian Russian Expedition 1918-1920. It appears that he brought his bride back to Blaenavon, South Wales, where they lived until he died of TB in Royal Gwent (Beechwood House) Hospital, Newport in 1923. I am not even sure of his bride's name - except that family members seem to think her first name may have been Nina I have obtained a copy of David James' naval record card from TNA which indicates that he served from 28th April 1911 until 15th January 1920. There is no mention of his marriage on his record card. I have also looked in vain at the Family Record Centre, London for details of his marriage in the overseas and armed forces marriages as well as the more usual GRO Index from 1917 - 1923.. The South Wales Weekly Argus of 23 June 1923 reports that my uncle was given a Military Funeral and in the report mentions ' During the flight of the Russians Seaman Evans married a Russian Lady, who is presently in Blaenavon' I would really appreciate any suggestions anyone may be able to give which would enable me to(a) trace the name of his bride and (b) the details of their wedding. David

Have you got his death cert - maybe his wife registered the death? Or his death might have been reported in the local paper, which might mention his widow.

Hi Helen, Unfortunately the Death Cert indicates that the informant was the Newport Deputy Coroner. The newspaper report of his death merely refers to his wife as a 'Russian Lady'. Apparently there was an inquest into his death - I wonder if that would be availabale to see anywhere and if so whether his wife's details would be included? David

Have you checked any obituary notices in the local paper?

Hi Pippa, Yes, no joy I'm afraid. looking at the local papers for that time, there were very few obits.

A thought! Did they have any children so could order the birth cert?

If there was an inquest, I am sure there would be a report, however minute, in the local newspaper. It might give an address or some other clue. Possibly his widow gave evidence.

Did David leave a Will.? Hopefully his wife would be named there.
