It is a very good site, so here is a tip, I was stuck on finding a place name for one of my rellies that appeared on one of the censuses, I could not find it on any modern map, so after a while I decided to use this site and it was their, It did not come up when I entered it in the search field so I entered the place name for the area of the census then zoomed in and used the pan Nth/Sth/Est and West function and it was their, just to the west of the town, If it was not for this site I would still be loosing sleep thinking about where in heavens this place was, that was 18 months ago so just think how big the bags under my eyes would be now :-)) Roy |

Paul, There's a local road called Wych Lane and a pub called the Wych Way Inn. We've always been told this was the medieval name and spelling. The map of this (1870) shows a place called Witch, in Witch Lane, with Witch Cottage. This is much more interesting....... :-) |

Denise, I was getting that message when I looked up oldmaps, a site that I believe used to exist, but old-maps seems to work, and it's a brilliant site! Suex |

Old Maps. Just tried to view this site and got this message,. defunct ! - due to a steady stream of enquiries for old maps rather than some of the reproduction maps my client supplies he has decided to withdraw his web site...however all is not lost for anyone wishing to pursue their interests in old maps further. If you enter the following into a good search engine eg altavista.com you will get a result, so try this key phrase 'victorian+ordnance+survey+maps' Am I doing something wrong? Thanks Denise. |
