the same reason as my rellie, he was sent from Derby to Gillingham, i think the reason was because they were given a long, 5+years sentance of penal servatude, this was with Hard Labour, they got sent to Gillingham or Portland from all over the country for this, as the local town gaols were only for short terms, holding drunks and low level criminals and had no way of puting them to Hard labour, my rellie got 5 years Penal Servatude for stealing two Sheep in Derbyshire and went to Gillingham in 1887

Thanks Nell, did ask a researcher to check records but they couldn't find him.

It will be in the prison register, which should be in the county records office. If you are lucky it will be indexed. Prison registers give admission/discharge dates, details of crime, trial, and physical description of convicts. Generally if you are sent a long way away from your home it means you've been very very bad. Oh dear! nell

I am trying to find out why my 2x Gt. Grandfather would have been sent to gaol in Gillingham when he was from Durham. Has anyone any idea
