My gr gr grandfather was Edmund/Edmond Schofield/Scofield/Schoffield, etc. He came to America in 1848 and the only hint of his birth year is from census records. He was born about 1806, possibly in Rochdale, Lancastershire, Eng. He married approximately 1826 to Betty Crossley a daughter of William and Sarah ( ? ) Crossley who were from Heywood, Eng. The children of Edmund and Betty are: James b. August, 1827 (there is another James in the area born about the same time that belongs to another family). Elizabeth b. 17 July 1830 reportedly in Rochdale Robert T. b. 20 March 1833 possibly in Saddleworth Thomas S. b. April 1835 possibly in Saddleworth Cornelius b. 1 Aug 1839, possibly in Saddleworth Mary J. b. April 1841, probably in Saddleworth Edmund b. abt. 1844 and d. abt 24 July 1847 in Rochdale John b. 7 November 1846 d. Unknown On the Crossley side of the family, I do want to know more about Betty's parents. The children of William and Sarah are (most of the info gathered from family letters): Cornelius Crossley Robert Crossley, m. Betsy Mills Moved to Massachusetts, USA prior to 1846 and paid for Edmund Schofield's passage to America in 1847. Mary ? Crossley William Crossley Said to have been the mayor of Heywood. Betty Crossley (might be Elizabeth)...died in Rochdale about 26 July 1847 in Rochdale. Of course, I am mainly interested in the direct ancestors: Edmund Schofield; Betty Crossley and her parents, William and Sarah. However, I do want any birth dates and other info on any of them and I especially am curious as to what happened to John Schofield as he didn't come to America with the rest and I wonder if the Crossley family kept him in England as he was so young to travel at the time. Sarah Crossley died 17 Novemberf 1859, probably in Heywood and I tried to find a death record on her on the internet but couldn't locate it...I would like to know her parents also. If anyone has access to the 1841 census for this area i would be gratful for any help. thanks |

Lindy Try family search org You wiil find Births and Marriages for the name Edmund Schofield on there Rochdale Local studies centre hold the records for St Chads The children that were born in Saddleworth might be harder to find because Saddleworth is an area and incorporates lots of villages and hamlets. Also parts of Saddleworth were known as the parish of Quick and that was included with Rochdale Saddleworth was part of Yorkshire Happy Hunting Bren |
