Hi Janet Look for something you know such as your own birth or your parents births/marriage, assuming these events were in England or Wales. It helps you to find your way around. Heather

You have a much better chance of finding births, marriages and deaths, especially more up to date ones (ones after about 1910 that you won't find on the FreeBMD search). Kath. x

Thanks to everyone. Have only ever used the ordinary ancestry. Does beta give better chances of finding things?

LOL!! On the Search for You Ancestors page, look down the bottom where it says More Collections Click on England and Wales BMD Index Beta Next screen, you will see: Search the complete images Search the Birth index images Search the Marriage index images Search the Death index images Click on which one you want. Next part....enter the name and year you want. Best usually to search one year at a time as otherwise it can be VERY confusing. Make a note of which years you have looked. best to just play around with it and then ask again if you get stuck (you may find Q's apparently missing for the name chosen, but sometimes they can still be found with a little fiddling about!) it is the Fiche Indexes of Birth Death and Marriages records just like you can use in Libraries, chose your preference B, M or D and put in name Quarter and Year. www.ancestry*co*uk/search/rectype/vital/freebmd/bmd.aspx
