can anyone tell me if all parish records are held at the church in question or are they at record offices. i have been trying to get in touch with two churches but i am having no luck - just answer machines. if i dont reply i am off to bed but will catch up in the morning love linda x |

I think youll have more luck with the local records office, most of the paish records are kept there now. Suzanne |

I would agree with Suzanne. I think many churches used to keep the registers until the book was full, then hand it over to the Record Office. There may have been a ' calling in ' of registers though because last year I heard that the marriage register for a Herefordshire village of ancestral interest had moved from the parish, where we had previously hoped to view. It had started in 1837 and the same book was still in use,- not full, when it was handed in during 2004....... Well it was a small place ! ....Wonderful to see all those signatures for so many in my family. |

Hi Lindy If you go on Genuki and put the location you're looking for in the search box it will then bring up the information about that parish including telling you exactly which records are where. You may find the Bishops Transcripts for that parish in one place whilst the actual registers are in another and it may then be easier for you to get to one place rather than the other (if you see what I mean). You may have to search round on the parish page to find the information you want but it is listed there - amongst everything else!! Hope this helps. Snowdrops |
