Hi, have just realised the my gg grandmother had a child 3 years before she married. The child was called Saran Newton (J) Sutcliffe, her mother was Rosetta Sutcliffe. Sarah was born in the september qtr 1878. In 1891 Rosetta is married and Sarah is down as being daughter. (Head is John Gregory but Sarah still has the name Sutcliffe) My problem is even though she is down as being daughter in 1891 I don;t think that John Gregory was her Dad because she would have taken the name when the parents married. This leaved me thinking: could Newton have been the surname of the Father? I have found the reference for her birth and marriage and am going to go to the local RO tommorrow and buy them. |

I would think it's very likely that the father had the surname Newton. Have you tried looking on the Census to see if there was a family with this surname living in the neighbourhood. You might be able to pick out a likely candidate but probably can never prove anything. It is possible the birth certificate may have his name on but unlikely. |

It was common practice to use the fathers name in the middle and the mothers name as actual surname, then if the parents married the mothers name was dropped leaving the fathers name Elly |
