''Broker'' can cover all sorts of activities - essentially it seems to be matching up clients to service providers. You can have ship-brokers, too. Having said that, if the premises were for a pawnbroker, then maybe that's what he was. Have you looked at the Historical Directories site - you might find him there - alongside his activity. I have a rellie in 1881 listed at an address,occupation = broker. The same property in 1891 is a pawnbrokers shop,but otherwise unnoccupied.Would a broker be another term for a pawnbroker? Glen |
