Isn't it sad and generally annoying the state some graveyards are in? I went to a churchyard yesterday where I know my GGGGrandparents are buried, the old part of the cemtery is tidy but the tombstones that were unsafe have been tumbled face down into the ground, not a hope of finding a name on them. Why can't the warders or whoever tumbles them put them backside down so that the writing can still be read? I'm sure it wouldn't cost them anymore to do it that way and maybe family members who find their long lost ancestors might be able to repair or whatever if they could see the headstones. I know I would love to re-erect a few of mine, does anyone feel the same? Carol |

I imagine councils have limited funds to do anything in graveyards. It is frustrating, I agree. I've had several fruitless visits to graveyards. In some cases no sign there was ever a grave, let alone a gravestone! I've also found most gravestones where they exist just give bare names and dates (and I've even found the wrong year on a gravestone!) I'm sure we all dream of finding a gravestone with a long list of pedigrees, exact dates and details!! nell |

Hi I've been to three churchyards today, one was really pretty, cut grass & flowers, the other two not quite so nice. About 50% of the headstones were eligible, sunken way into the ground, fallen over or covered in weeds. Some just had J. W. P. 1864 S. D. 1867 but I still loved walking round :-) I know what you mean though Sam |

Apparently it used to be the practice to steal the headstones and then possibly take the writing off and resell it. That is what happened to my great grandparents and their parents. There is nothing to note where they are now. Denise |

apparently in Sweden, everyone pays a small amount of money that goes towards maintaining the gravestones in the churchyards and their cemeteries are all neat and pretty |
