Forgive me for sounding stupid but I have found one of my ancestors on 1838 Poor Law Valuation in Whitby Yorkshire and its says £2.10s, does this mean they owed them money or where poor? Your advice is appreciated. Many thanks Yvonne |

Hi Deborah Thanks for the information, now I know why he moved to Liverpool because he must of been out of work, hence in them days Liverpool was a booming port, I think he must of come here first then sent for the family. Many thanks much appreciated. Yvonne |

The Poor Law Valuation was a list of inhabitants and the rateable value of their properties. It was drawn up because the Poor Law payments to the poor, either for upkeep in the workhouse or in relief paid direct to the poor, was funded by levying a rate on the inhabitants who had land or property. So no your relative wasn't poor, he had property with a rateable value of £2 10s - which I think was based on the amount of rent that his property would produce per year? |
