How to look up an address on Ancestry?

Could anyone tell me how to search for a specific address on Ancestry? I am looking for Wellington Street in Woolwich. I have found the link to Woolwich but it is divided into so many subdistricts. Is there a quicker way of finding which district a street is in, or do you just have to get out a map and try to match it up with the enumerator's description of each district? Thanks for any help with this.

I have always found it hard work to find a street in the census. I try putting a common name in to search and once I get the area start trawling the pages of the census - then click on the area at the top of the census and look through each one until I find it. If there is a quicker way I would love to know about it. It is so frustrating when you find the street and the number you want is missing and you have to try and find the number you are looking for. Good luck Irene

The 1881 census is searchable by address on Ancestry. If you're trying to find someone on the 1871 or 1891, you can use the 1881 to find the street, then try to find one of the residents of the street in the previous/next census - with any luck you'll find someone who was still at the same address during the 10 year period. Once you have the street in 1871/1891, repeat the process for 1861/1901, and so on. The 1861 and 1891 are searchable by address on 1837online. The 1901 is address searchable at the PRO site. Both of these are pay per view however, but may be worth the few pence if you can't find the address on Ancestry! And you can at least use a search on these sites to check that the street actually existed, without spending any units. Richard

Thanks for all your suggestions. I finally found the adress on Ancestry but not my relative who was supposed to be there! I have been looking for Albert George Thomas who gives his address as 92 Wellington Street, Woolwich on his marriage certificate. His wedding took place on 18th April 1891 (just days after the census) but when I finally found his address there was another family living there. Very frustrating.
