I am having trouble finding some rellies but on one of the marriage certs I have the occupation is Coffee Roaster and I wonder if anyone can tell me where in the clerkenwell, or Shoreditch areas one would do this. The year by the way is 1860 Thanks Irene

Isn't there an address on the cert? I don't know about coffee roasting - whether this would mean they worked in a factory, or just in a local cafe/coffee house? Or maybe for a grocery store. I suppose you could see if there are lots of other people in the area on 1861 census doing the same thing? nell

Irene on the 1881 census there are 207 coffee roasters but I dont know what that entailed. Georgina.

Maybe significant, maybe not - there was an Italian community in the Clerkenwell area at that time. Maybe they did their own coffee roasting locally, because they like(d) a darker roast and then realised they could make a business out of it, doing lighter roasts for the indiginous palette too. Just a thought.....
