I found a baby being born in Southwark workhouse and I felt so sad for them - only found out later that women would go there to the infirmary if they were having probs with delivery! |

Another possibility could be some sort of depression, or mental illness/breakdown. Workhouses did sometimes take in such cases, as any kind of mental health problems were not really understood very well. Sharon xx |

Shirley is right. My great grandad was in Holborn Workhouse, and died there. But he lived nearby and was still working. Carol |

Remember a lot of people actually worked in the work house. I found a relative as a medical officer and a couple as nurses. |

Georgina and Shirley, thanks for your replies - didn't think of that! In 1851, I have found his son living with his grandmother, but from memory don't think I found his parents. Once again, thanks for your help. Best wishes, Carol. |

Carol a lot of people went into the workhouse because they were sick and they could get medical help there. Have you found him on later census's with the family? Georgina. |

He may not have been there as an inmate of the workhouse but in the hospital part of it. Workhouses had infirmary bulidings attached to them and they were available to those who couldnt afford private treatment. Shirley |

Hi all, I think I have found a relative in Edinburgh Charity Workhouse in 1841. He is married, but is there alone. He has a family (wife and child), wife appears to be working as a hat trimmer, living with another couple, possibly her sister and brother in law (not checked yet) who are both working. Was it usual for one member of the family to have to go into a workhouse? I am a bit puzzled. Any help appreciated. Thanks and Happy Easter, Carol x |
