Banns

Banns books were not as important as the marriage register. You might have had the banns called three times, but that was no proof that you actually got married. Consequently the banns book does not always survive. It should be in the local record office. Sometimes a combined banns/marriage register was used and occasionally the banns are in the back of the marriage register. It is always worth looking at, since spellings and residences are occasionally different - though on balance the marriage register is more likely to be accurate, as it was more important.

Hi Zoe, They don't give exact addresses. For instance, one of mine says ' Thomas Brown of this parish' and then his wife to be says 'Elizabeth Metcalfe of Chaple le Dale'. So if you only know the parish of one it will give the parish of where the other one lived - but not necessarily where they were born. I was lucky, both mine were in the parishes they were born in. Hi Zoe I got copies of my ancesters banns back to 1840's from the Parish Registers kept in the County Records Office. Contact the one in question for yours (could even be listed online) and I'm sure they'll have them too. Snowdrops

I have seen the banns of some of my rellies, in with the parish records, but it may not the case with all churches. I would try the records office that keeps the parish records for your area.
