I've looked for George Pannell, born about 1839 (more probably 1837) in Alverstoke, Hampshire in the 1881 census on the Family Search website and can't find him. I've tried the same on the Ancestry site with no luck. He was there his whole life, and definately in 1877 and 1882 when he has more kids. Kind people have found him in 1871 and 1891 (with his son Henry William aka William Henry), but where has he gone in 1881? Did people ever refuse to fill in the census returns? Did households get missed from the returns?

I have a selection of navvies missing from various censuses. The usual reason for not finding them is because their place of bitrth is recorded wrongly (or as not known), and/or their age is complete guesswork. That's what happens if you are lodging! I don't hink I will ever find wone of my ancestors. in 1861 or 1871 - I have him until his marriage and on his death cert. Ihave his wife and children in both the censuses, but not him! Lx

Forgot to say, the census image for 1881 is scruffy writing, but looks more like Pannell than Parnell. Merry

For yours, I looked him up on the 1871 first.....saw he was born in Gosport and children in Forton. Went to 1881 and put in George Born Gosport five years either way from 1838 and glanced down the list for names that looked possible, concentrating on those beginning with B, R and P because P words seem to get mistranscribed as those other letters sometimes. Saw Parnell, so that was that. If that hadn't found him by then, I would have looked for one or other of his children (first name only) and born Forton. Or all George's living in Alverstoke....etc etc Merry
