I had a gt gt grandfather called Thomas Bell born c 1824 in Lanercost in Cumberland, his parents were James and Elizabeth. Another GR member had a gt gt grandfather called Henry Bell born c 1828 also in Lanercost. His parents were John and Elizabeth ( nee Telford ) He says John could have been John James as that is what Henry`s youngest son was called. My problem is, how can I find out if John and Elizabeth and James and Elizabeth are the same people thus establishing a connection Eileen

Hi This is the problem I don`t know wether or not he had any siblings. I haven`t tried the IGI, but tips on how to go about it would be appreciated. You might be able to tell from that that I am a ' newbie ' Eileen

If you click on the batch number on the IGI and then search for: a) children of John Bell and Elizabeth born +/- 10 years of 1825 b) children of James Bell and Elizabeth in the same year range you will see that these were two separate couples both baptising families in that period. It's quite likely that John and James were brothers - next step would be to search for their marriages and their baptisms, either on IGI aor even better on the original parish registers. Sorry just seen your message that you haven't tried IGI. Go to www.familysearch.org, select search IGI, search first for the baptism of Thomas Bell 27th March 1824 then click on the batch number for the entry that comes up to get a form on which you can search for the families by entering parents names.

Hi Thank you to everyone who has helped me out. I am however still a bit stuck Henry had at least one brother called Joseph, but I can`t find him on the IGI any ideas ? Eileen

Joseph is there on the same batch number - baptised the same day as Henry as well

Hi Judith Thank you ,I`ve found him. Eileen Forgive me if you think I am being thick but, if 10 children come up under a batch number does that mean they are all siblings?
