thanks again jim for looking this stuff up for me i am very grateful as i know how time consuming it is, very clearly the other censuses offer a greater insight, i dont have access at the moment to any other than the 1881, i see ancestry are doing a free trial but am a bit nervous of them taking my money without giving me a chance to cancel at the end of 14 days, anyway so naomi obviously left lingfield and went into service i believe that the area of St george as given on the cert must be around the same sort of area as she would have been working. also just noticed a witness is anne wickham so that ties in thanks again for all your help, at least i might be able to sleep tonight now! yvette

hi jim thanks for all your help, i will go off and view the records you have advised on, ernest was indeed married to Esther, they were my gt grandparents, the confusion lies in whether or not i had the right marriage cert for ernests parents, sometimes i convince myself that it must be right then i have doubt, i just expected them to be in surrey, i know a lot of people went to london at that time for work, i have charles on the 1861 census working on a farm in kent aged 15. thanks loads yvette will let you know how i get on just remembered that on the marriage cert for charles and naomi, naomis father name is given as richard?

East Surrey FHS have their research centre in Lingfield. I ought to know, but cannot remember, whether you have to join to request help, but I know that the woman who does lookups has a lot of local knowledge

thanks kath, on the cert their ages are given as full, and charles would have been around 20 and naomi older, it gets worse, just tried looking on ancestry bmd and i cant even find the record of the marriage, i was trying to see if maybe there were another couple with the same name, and i cant even find charles birth on there either. Still i will keep looking yvette

Quite a few couples went to London to marry, especially if they wanted to get married without parental consent. Have you found their birth references? What age were they on the marriage certificate? If they said they were 21 or over and you know that they were not this old, that could be a reason for marrying in London (where they would not be known). Kath. x

hi all, happy easter, i dont know if anyone can advise or help. My problem is I have been looking at my ancestors name Malyan. My gt grandfather was Ernest Malyan, i found him living in Lingfield in on the 1881 census. Pretty sure its him as the family always said he came from there. His mother and father are Charles and Naomi. Charles born Hever in 1846. and Naomi in Lingfield. I have only been able to find one marriage for a charles and Naomi, got the cert, and it states they were married in London in 1866. Naomis maiden name is Wickham. Charles fathers name is also charles and profession is carpenter. i am not convinced that i have the correct cert for a couple of reasons, it seems strange that they went back to Lingfied after they married, and of all the malyans on GR none of them have any connection to my family, even though they are all around Lingfield/Kent. I just recently came across someone on Gr with a Charles born the same time as mine 1846 and she kindly gave me access to her tree. Her charles father name is william, now although i know it is possible that there was more than one charles born in 1846 in hever, i am still doubting that i have got the right cert, i would be grateful for any advice, i just cant see why the would go to london and then back to farming after they married. Sorry this is so long its been bugging me for ages, and sometimes it helps just to write it down thanks for reading, yvette
