Thanks everyone! I have been accessing the free bmd part of Ancestry but it ask for a subscription for census (then comes up with a blank screen when I want to pay!) I will try the other site you suggest. Thanks again Joanna

its free on ancestry at the moment. you cannot view image on familysearch.org you only see the transcription Roy

The 1881 census can be viewed for free on www.familysearch.org. Be aware that there are many transcription errors that I have found so don't give up!
