How do l find which Regiment at Ashton under lyne

Hi Can anyone please help Would anyone know how l can find out which regiment was at the Ashton Under Lyne Barracks in Mossley. Lancs in 1901 My husbands grandfather is there in the 1901 census We would like to be able to find out which regiment he was with. Regards Pam

I am not sure about Mossley, but the Manchester Regiment were based at Ladysmith Barracks Ashton U Lyne and Ladysmith Barracks was on the road that leads to Mossley...but definatley in Ashton U Lyne ...not Mossley A prrvate estate has been built were the barracks once stood but there is a small memorial at what used to be the main entrance. My father joined up there Cheers Colin

Have you looked at the beginning of the census return for the barracks. It sometimes gives the regiment there. Alternatively give the name of your ancestor so we can have a look. Kath. x

hi pam if you can get to ashton under lyne, in the town hall is the museum of the manchester regiment, open monday to saturday 10am to 4pm. for enquiries curator garry smith on 0160 342 2254 or email at garry.smith [email protected] i am sure they will be able to help you maureen

Yes, Id say the same, if you look at the image at the top of each page it usually has the regiment. If not try the first page of the images. OR if you click on his name it will often show the registration district etc and the regiment at the barracks.
