i have the full name and fathers name,address and profession when my grandmother married,i know she was 18 when she married in 1949,how do i go about trying to trace her full date of birth,as i don't know where she was born

I assume that your grandmother is dead? The odds are that she died relatively recently, so her death certificate would give her date and place of birth. While this information cannot be regarded as entirely accurate, it might provide a clue. Did she have any brothers or sisters? Are any still alive? Can your parents remember anything? Do you have any photos of her? It's a good idea to find out as much as possible from your family, otherwise you might find yourself tracing the wrong family, particularly if her name is not unusual.

hi her name is dorothy margaret phillips and she married my grandad ablert henry seaman on the 3rd november 1949,when she was 18,her dad was called arther phillips and they lived at 46 oxford road,acocks green,birmingham,her dad was a club manager. she gave birth to my dad on the 21.04.50,and left him a week later,that is all the details we know,no photo's or anything,we only have 1 living relative who said she knows something,but refuses to help us.her profession at the time of marrage was a machinest. i have found this info out myself by getting a copy of my dads birth cert,and looking on gro index for the marrage details,and getting a copy of that bith cert,but now i am stuck,sorry for the long reply i hope you can help. thanks rachael

The nearest one I can find is Dec Q 1930 mothers maiden name Smith - Dudley (I think that is nearish to Birmingham ??) Ref 6b 1332. What do you think? Dea x

I'l tell you how I did it in a minute but just now - I have looked for her parents' marriage 1928 - 1930 - Can't find anything. Do you know if she had any older brothers or sisters? Dea x

i have no idea sorry her father was a witness to the marrage hence why i know his name being arther phillips,but i just don't know anymore guessing she was born between 1930-1932,only because she was 18 in 1949,wish i knew more but i don't rachael

If you think Dudley is near enough - you could send for that birth cert and see what info it brings you. That is the only one I can see which comes close so I think it would be worth a try? Without any more info - I don't think I can help further but if you find anything else - let me know. Dea x
