I need to order a marriage cert. but in the records the husbands surname is misspelt. I dont know whether to put the misspelt name when I order the cert or spell it the right way. Any ideas? Thanks Carole xx

I'd spell it the way it appears in the index, Carole. Heather

Depend which records you are talking about. FreeBMD or ancestry indexes should not be relied on.

Carole If you know the females name, why not just order it under that, you don't have to put both names. Regards Looby

Thanks for replies The wifes name was Mary Barnes so I was a bit concerned abt just putting her name with it being so common and getting wrong cert. I have looked at the actual page on ancestry and its def spelt wrong. Carole xx

Carole, I would ring up the register office in question. You can find telephone number by following links. Say in Free BMD ancestor was born Beverley, click on Beverley, if it says registers now divided..... click again until you have address & phone number. Often you get a kind person on line who will confirm immediately re registration in question. Ray

I had to order my grandparents' marriage cert. in the bride's name as my grandfather's was spelt wrong. There shouldn't be a problem if you have cross checked the reference numbers, where hopefully there will be only be one Mary Barnes on that page.

You may well find it was spelt wrongly on the actual cert, which is why the index is wrong. nell
