Hi Annie I got my gt gt grandfathers divorce reference from the National Archivist site (pay to view). His wife was the petitioner in 1872. This website also offers a record recovery service whereby they obtain the documents for you for a fee (around £20). The FRC does not hold divorce records but they do hold indexes to the divorce files from 1858 to around 1938 that are held in TNA at Kew. The case files are in record series J77 and can only be seen at Kew as they are not microfilmed yet so it is the original document. Indexes to these files are in record series J78 and can be seen on microfilm at the FRC or Kew. The FRC and the National Archivist websites give more details on finding divorce records. Helen x

Hi Annie I gather that there are two different indexes. The one at the FRC is (roughly speaking) those who applied for divorce and there is one at Kew for those who actually got divorced. I know that some people have searched both, but only found anything at the FRC.

Hi Jean I have found an announcement in The Times May 1924 for the divorce Ive been looking for......would I still need to go to the FRO for a reference before going to Kew? Not being lazy but am quite away from London. Many thanks Annie

Helen, I have one for 1923. Got details from the index at the FRC and then went to Kew. Viewed the original papers and letters. There was a copy of the marriage certificate, dates of births of the three children etc. Jean x.

Has anyone obtained a divorce record from Kew or National Archivist site and if so was it easy to find and what does it comprise of? Helen x
