Just got a certificate that tells me my great grandfather was a inmate in the Manchester Workhouse in 1871. Does anyone have links or information about the Workhouse? (not from institutions . org -read that site) 10yrs later he was in Adel reformatory in Yorkshire- naughty boy, any info on this institution would be helpful. Adios Rob |

He may not have been a really naughty boy (remember nicking a bite to eat was a crime then), it may have just been a place where he could learn a trade or skill to get him on in life. Poor little devil, workhouse at 6 - what a life. |

Google search - Adel Reformatory (there are more sites) Certified 8th December 1857 for 150 boys. Re-certified in 1916 again for 150 boys. A large well-built school set in 20 acres of land. Became East Moor School Approved School from 1933 for the reception of 135 boys |

I found info on a workhouse one of my rellies had given birth in! Type in 'Union Workhouse'+Manchester and it should come up. I found a whole site from Richmond archives. Went down there, looked up the records and got all the info Ineeded. Those Victorians kept meticulous records. Good luck Sylvia. |

Thx for ideas. I am currently going through google for refs to Workhouse. However the big problem with google is that it doesn't order anything; there are thousands of hits for references to Workhouse but because Engels once made a fleeting remark on the Workhouse any communist website comes up for example. Google is flawed this way and it makes research tedious and means your likely to miss something important or interesting. Thx again Rob |

You must put Union Work house in inverted commas then+Manchester and you wont get side tracked. Sylv. |

Have you seen this page?: http://users.ox.ac.uk/~peter/workhouse/Manchester/Manchester.shtml It tells you where the archives are stored for the Manchester Union (under records at the bottom). Merry |
