Youre welcome Jane, Still cant find Fanny after 1881 - who did she marry ? Would be good to find her on 1891 and 1901 to tie up the loose ends. Elaine.

One of my ancestors almost certainly committed suicide. No inquest survived, so I read the newspaper account. It was clearly purged of every juicy titbit. None of the witnesses was named and in particular no details were given of her husband, who might be expected to be most affected by her death, most likely to shed light on her state of mind (and who remarried shortly afterwards, to a much younger woman).

She was left by her hubbie in 1890 when her went ( to put it politely!) with another woman to America. I haven't been able to find her getting married to anyone else and Fanny Toyne is not on the 1901 census in Lincolnshire. Her son went into the Army in 1901. I got the death cert and obviously wanted the inquest papers which I got just to round off the whole thing properly but its thrown up more questions. I get the thing about the age but her dad was definitely alive in 1891 and we can't find any record of a Samuel Toynes death from that point until the September she died. Also don't you think its odd that a grieving gran wouldn't mention her grandson only two days after his mum had died?

Newspaper reports don't necessarily include all the facts. My gt grandfather's inquest only mentioned his widow because she gave evidence. It did not give any other biographical information about him. Information given by witnesses isn't necessarily true - just what they believe to be true. Its quite hard for people to remember when their relatives died sometimes. As to ages, 2 years out could be an error, typing mistake or ignorance. Toyne doesn't strike me as being a very common name. What reasons did you have for thinking this was your relative to start with? nell

Have you checked if there is another person with the same name that was born about the time of her birth- just a thought that may help solve your problem. Irene

Hi Having taken previous advice on inquests into suspicious deaths I have got the newspaper report on my G G Grans death. But... (never that easy is it!) several discrepancies have come up and now I'm not even convinced that its her. So ......! 1 No mention of her having a son, only that she possibly was pregnant and therefore in disgrace. 2 no mention of her being abandoned/divorced by her husband etc by her mum who testified. 3 Her father had supposedly died before she did (1892) but I have him dying in 1899. I'm confused! Its definitely a Fanny Toyne but the age at death is wrong - mine was born 1864 which would make her 28 not 26 when she died. Help or advice where to go from here would be appreciated as I'm at a loss. Thanks
