Was he not brought up in the Ashton in Makerfield area near Wigan just as a young boy? I'm sure I heard it on a history programme and it stuck in my head with being near the area. Will do a quick skip on net for local area. Louise

Hope this helps as it give the area of birth. George Stephenson, the son of a colliery fireman, was born at Wylam, eight miles from Newcastle-upon-Tyne, on 9th June, 1781. The cottage where the Stephenson family lived was next to the Wylam Wagonway, and George grew up with a keen interest in machines. George's first employment was herding cows but when he was fourteen he joined his father at the Dewley Colliery. George was an ambitious boy and at the age of eighteen he began attending evening classes where he learnt to read and write. In 1802 Stephenson became a colliery engineman. Later that year he married Frances Henderson, a servant at a local farm. To earn extra money, in the evenings, he repaired clocks and watches. On 16th October, 1803, his only son, Robert was born. Frances suffered from poor health and she died of consumption in 1806. Louise

Thanks everyone for your input. I think I will be going around in circles for a very long time with this one. Gail

There are a few names on the IGI, which you could confirm with the original Wylam parish registers. Search for births/baptisms with parents Robert Stephson and Mabel.

Think he had brothers Robert, James, John and sisters Eleanor and Ann. Not sure if there was any more. Kath. x

Gail according to the IGI this is his birth info... George <STEPHENSON> <Male> Event(s): Birth: 09 JUN 1781 , Northumberland, England Christening: Death: 12 AUG 1848 Burial: Parents: Father: Robert Stephenson Mother: Mabel Carr Stephenson If you go to the familysearch site and just enter his parents names in the right hand search boxes you will get a long list on the IGI results of the children born to this couple. The trouble is all the entries are entered by LDS members so may be wrong. Georgina.
