What do you want to look for? If you want free access to Ancestry, remember that you can search the indexes for free from home. You won't get the images, but it can save time on the day if you know what to search on for the results you want. The 1901 census is only available free in microform, but if your ancestor lived in a village or you have a specific address, you can search GR's 1901 census index to confirm they were there. If you want to look at a whole village, to see who the neighbours were, it is much quicker to use microfilm or microfiche than it is to wait for an image to load, even on broadband. The FRC has lots of other things to offer: will index 1858 - c1942 divorce index free access to lots of websites, especially Documents Online (wills, sailors' records, medal cards etc) Break your day up, so you don't spend all your time at a computer or peering at microfilm. Try to decide in advance what you want to do and why. Note what you've looked, even if you found nothing. Don't be afraid to ask the staff: they are very friendly and helpful. And don't worry if you don't find everything you hoped to. Just enjoy yourself. (If you like food, there's a very nice bakery and a wonderful turkish restaurant, both in nearby Exmouth Market!) |

The census area upstairs is quite hot, I've found, so wear layers you can peel off if you are going to be looking there. nell |

Is that the one in London, if so it is a good idea to take a packed lunch and a drink. You can leave all your stuff downstairs in the lockers. You have to put in a £1 to use them but get it back when you have finished. You need to write down what you are looking for and tick off the books you have search. Each year of BMD comes in quarters so four books for each year. Have a nice day and I hope you find all you are looking for. Irene |
