Thanks for the replies. Yes, Annette I have discounted the Depwade birth as the Bailey family lived at the same address in Burgate 1841-1861. Georgina - I will look at the 1851 census of Eye to see what relationship Alfred Bailey is to the rest of the household. Rosemary - this looks promising but what is a Beta Index? I know I searched the indexes thoroughly at the FRC apart from one volume that was out for rebinding. Finally, why does Zachariah totally disappear?

Your opinions please and bear with me for the length of the post. Have already posted this on BBC’s Family History board so if you are a regular there, read no further. Can’t find the birth certificate of my Great Grandfather Alfred Bailey who was born in Burgate, Suffolk 1846 +- 3 years. Have searched the indexes at the FRC but no result. I have the certificates of both his marriages and have found him on the census 1871-1901. I know he was the son of Kesiah and Zachariah Bailey of Burgate, Suffolk but he does not appear in their household in the censuses of 1841, 1851 and 1861. Neither does he appear on the index to the 1851 census Hartismere. I have all the baptisms records for Burgate (1813-1901) and although Alfred’s elder brothers and sisters were baptised in infancy, he was not baptised until 5th October 1862 - his mother had died 2 years previously aged 60. Alfred had 2 younger brothers who do not appear on the Burgate baptisms but are on the censuses of 1841-1861 at least once. I have tracked down one of these brothers on the 1881 census but the other has simply vanished without trace. His name is Zachariah (aged 3 and 14 on the 1851 and 1861 censuses, respectively) but then he disappears. There was a birth of a Zachariah registered in Hartismere in the 1840s but there’s no birth of an Alfred registered 1839-1853. Do any of you think that Alfred and Zachariah could be the same person?
