Hello As I am so new to this site could someone fill me in on how I go about getting more info on adoption..this is the story... My mother in law was adopted in 1934 in UK, she has now passed away. She really wanted to track down her birth parents. Where do I start? I have her birth certificate and parents names. I have tried looking for their marriage certificate 1911 - 1934 and have found nothing. Any help including what powers I would have regarding accessing adoption info would be most helpful.thanks Belinda

I think I'm right in saying that only your mother-in-law would have had the right to access her adoption file. Who registered the birth? If the father was named he should have been present at the registration if they weren't married. I note a 4 year delay in adoption. I wonder if one or other parent died or was very ill and unable to care for the child. Have you looked for the birth of possible siblings with the same mother's maiden name logged in the GRO?

The General Register Office website has a section full of information on Adoption and access to birth records. Go to http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/adoptions/ for advice, help and links. Liz
