I've never got around to actually joining any of them, but I do hear good things about them. I guess - like any organisation - they're as good as the active membership. Christine

I joined my local one,it costs £15 for a family or £12.50 individual. They have subscribed to Ancestry Library edition so members can use it free, they have the GRO indexes,Quarterly journals from loads of other FHS's,Parish records, books on all kinds of family history related things, and a great bookshop-especially good for Alan Godfrey maps.Even if you only ever used it to ask for help and advice occasionally,it'd be worth the membership fee.

Go for it. The journal will help give you ideas about all sorts of sources available for your area. These may be online, on cd or dvd, microfiche, bookform or a single copy in the society's library. There are plenty of people who have been researching for years, without putting their family tree on the internet. This a way of tapping into their expertise. Journals often have help wanted sections, where you can ask about your brickwalls. If you can't get to the area, there are often look ups or searches in records offered. Personally, I get far more from belonging to a local society, where I have no ancestors, because of the opportunity to go to meetings, help sessions, day courses. Some societies offer trips to London to visit Kew or the FRC. These are brilliant. There is nothing quite like seeing a friendly face: someone you can ask how to use the indexes, or where the loos are.
