Are you using Ancestry to look for him on the census's?Try searching for him by just his first name, even if its John, then refine your search by birth year and place,it is possible to find people that way.Or if you have piece numbers for other family members-ie his mum, enter the year + piece number and just his first name,I've found loads of 'missing' people doing this.

I suspect that, if you feel you can be more specific with names, people will find it easier to help. With the info you have supplied it isn't obvious how you know you have the right bride (surname ROBERTS) for the second marriage. But maybe she just went back to using her maiden(?) name, for some reason. Christine

Granddad`s surname was Maudesley, i have had nothing but dead ends whilst trying to get earlier than the 1901 census. I tried a different route, ie. his mothers second marriage, and this is where the problem starts. She is listed as having the surname Roberts. Any suggestions please as to where I go from here. Fed up and far to go.
