My 3x gt grandfather was called Isaiah Fellows Foden, but rumor had it that he was called William at birth. He appears as Isaiah on all census returns, even at the age of three, and also on his marriage certificate. I have found his birth but it is added at the bottom of the page in different handwriting to everyone else on the page. There is also a William Foden listed with the same district volume and page number. Isaiah has ben squeezed in at the correct place alphabeticly(?) with a number one by his name. He is then at the bottom of the page again with a number one by his name. Both these entries are in a diffeent handwriting and the numbers at the bottom are normal, all the other entries have the volume number in Roman numerals. How would I know if it was a change of name or will I just have to add it to my very long list of certificates to order? Sandra |

It does sound like a name-change. But I think most people would recommend you buy the cert for a direct ancestor anyway - even if you postpone it for now. Christine |

Thanks Christine I will add it to a growing list of certificates to send for. I just need to put them all in some sort of priority order. Very difficult as most of them are needed to extend my research. The ones that I hope will just confirm things, like this one, (I know who Isaiah's parents and grandparents were and have them on census returns),are a long way down the list! Thanks agian Sandra |

I saw the entry on the Beta Index. I am assuming you are referring to the one born in 1847 in Great Boughton. I see that Isaiah is squeezed in possibly because he could have been missed when they wrote the names on the page. I think the additional notation at the bottom was added later to clarify the entry above. Could Isaiah and William have been twins? Maybe William died before 1851. There are a couple of William Foden's in the Death Index (not the Beta) who died between 1847-1851 but in Congleton. No age at death is given. Might have to go through the Beta Death Index to see if there is another entry. Hope this helps. Rose |

Thanks Rose to be honest I hadn't thought about that as a possibility. There are twins in the family so I will look into it Sandra |
