I have been looking at my great grandfather's marriage certificate today, and it says 'by licence'. The others on the page say after Banns. What does by licence mean please? Thanks Julia

means by special licence.you can apply for a special licence so can marry sooner than putting up banns that have to read in church for three consecutive weeks and are open to someone objecting & holding up the marriage Some marriages in WW2 were by special license as the parties didnt have the time to wait due to hubby being shipped out.

Also means in victorian days that the parties were under age ie under 21 so parental consent i.e their license. was given for them to marry

Thank you both. The groom was just 21 and the bride was 25. I think they were getting married in a hurry as the witnesses were both from her family!! Julia
