I am sticking with William Shimmen. Have just been searching census + marriage & can not find anything else. Think it is a bit strange that I started to look for marriages after I had found William & Bethsheba Jackson in Middlesex, then low and behold my Bethsheba turns up in Marylebone. I am also thinking that they were living together. I am now off to search ships as they seem to disappear after 1861. Thanks again for the help Mags :) |

Just got back. Well done Nell. You could see though how Shimmen could be Skinner once you know. The 1861 marriage - surprising coincidence though??? Definitely gives Bethsheba Steward/t as the bride? I suppose they may have shacked up before marrying. |

Margaret The Shimmen marriage was registered in Sep quarter. The earliest date it could have taken place would be 1st July 1861, and the census was taken on 7 April 1861. So I think you need a Skinner marriage registered in Mar 1861 or earlier. nell |

Transcriber has faithfully reproduced what the enumerator wrote, but I bet its meant to be Bethsheba! Husband is a coach smith and Beth- is on the top of the next page. Address is 43 High Street, Marylebone. nell |

Thats the one Nell. I have spent so long on this it either isn't solvable on line, or I have missed the blooming obvious as usual. Mags |

Unusual names are often mistranscribed. How about this: 1861 St Marylebone Middlesex William Skinner abt 1832 Clopton, Suffolk,Head >>>Bethehebera Skinner abt 1839 Holton, Suffolk, Wife Robert Chipperfield abt 1840 Halesworth, Suffolk, Lodger George Corwith abt 1843 Ipswich, Suffolk,Lodger |

This is the one you found William Jackson abt 1833 Islington, Middlesex, Head St Luke Bethsheba Jackson abt 1838 Bahlam, Suffolk, Wife St Luke Middlesex She doesn't come from the same village. I can't read the place properly, but Bahlam looks like a mistake to me. I see she is working as a shoebinder. nell |

Yes that is true. I thought with a name like Bethsheba it would be easy to trace, but it isn't Mags |

Without the marriage cert which would give Bethsheba's name and occupation, you can't be sure that either marriage is hers. Have you looked for mistranscriptions? Maybe she is on the 1861 census as Bathsheba? nell |

So you found a marriage of Bethsheba in the September quarter of 1861? Im not sure if this can be the same person as the Bethsheba in the 1861 census which would have been taken several months prior to this marriage? |

Bethsheba Stewart b c1839 Holton Suffolk 1851 at home with her parents James & Martha in Suffolk. Surname spelt Steward. 1861 the family have moved to Strood Kent, but Bethsheba is not with them. I found a Bethsheba from Suffolk b 1838 married to William Jackson & living in Middlesex. in 1861. I have picked up a marriage for Bethsheba in Q sept 1861 in Marylebone Vol 1a page 878, but it is not to William Jackson. It is William Shimmen Q Sept 1861 Vol 1a page 878. I can not find her after 1861 & would appreciate your thoughts on this folks. Thanks Mags |
