51 and 61 they stayed in Berwick, then Ann keeled over with the dropsy in Berwick,he remarried and the whole lot scoot down to Norfolk where he finally expires by the sea. As for the kids, well sea air didn't agree, they all uproot to Lincoln and none last too long in the city air!! Sometimes i wonder how i made it Mind you the other line i can trace were firmly Norfolk based and i have them on the '41 as well,so i struck lucky with both families, just wonder why they gave up the 300 acre farm and the 6 servants. I have them in Berwickshire in the 51 and 61,it was classed as England,i'm guessing they were heading North but whether they were in Berwick by '41 i'm not sure.Although in every subsequent census the children are classed as Scottish born although all from Berwick, Spittal and Seahouses area. By '71 they are in Norfolk and by '81 onwards the family i in Lincolnshire. Glen

Wasn't Berwickshire part of England then? just remembered this, which I pasted from a thread some time last year Berwick on Tweed is great fun. It changed hands between the Scots and the English so many times that it started getting referred to specifically, just to ensure that everyone knew whether or not it was included in any particular legislation etc. The bit I like best about it's long and fascinating history is how, when the Crimean War broke out, war was declared on behalf of Great Britain, Ireland and the town of Berwick on Tweed. Unfortunately, when the peace treaty was made, they forgot to include Berwick on Tweed, therefore leaving it technically still at war with Russia!

Glen - the 1841 for England should be coming online on ancestry in the next few weeks, and as for Scotland, not sure when on Scotland's People, but some counties are transcribed on FreeCEN. But if you don't know what county they were in it is unlikely that anybody will be able to look them up at the moment. Kate.
