LDS Centre visit?

I use the Sheffield LDS Centre. They hold the complete BMD on fiche, all the local Census on film and loads of local Parish Records on fiche and film. They also have a big filing cabinet full of miscellaneous records from all over the country. I have ordered films of other Parish Records. As mentioned above this costs about £2.50. The films take a couple of weeks to arrive and will be held for a month. You can visit as often as you need in that month to view the film. The volunteers will show you how to use the readers but then you are left to your own devices, they don't interfere. And something that worried me a little, NO they don't try to preach their beliefs or persuade you to become a member of their church.

My local centre had Irish birth records and probably the marriages and deaths up to about 1921 or so. This was useful to me as I did think that I may need to go off to Dublin to do research there. I did ask them to make prints of the index to save me writing all the names out but they said for the Irish birth indexes that there was no way that they could do that, but they can print pages from the microfiche of Census pages, which is handy. They do need you to ring in advance to book a desk/viewer as they are so busy. Regards Claire

Thanks to everyone who responded. It sounds good, I'll give them a ring and organise a preliminary visit. My local centre is Northampton. Thanks again one and all. Ken

I've been to the one in London - its got tons of microfilm of parish records, online records, books etc. Elsewhere I believe that they have varied opening hours as they are staffed by volunteers. I guess its a good idea to phone in advance and see what they have and if you need to book a reader. nell

went to the one in london a couple of weeks ago, they had loads on fiche, you can order from other LDS libraries if not in the one you go to. I phoned first to see if they had what i was looking for, they couldnt have been more helpful, which one are you going to?

I believe you have to preorder parish records that you want to search as they dont hold them on site.

Has anyone out there ever visited an LDS Family History Centre? I've been told they are worth visiting, and that you can get more information from their equipment, like microfiche etc. The centres are all over the country. Ken
