I have found my ancestor in the 1851, 1871 and 1881 census. He is listed as apoliceman in 1871 and 1881. Does anybody have any ideas as to why he might be missing in 1861? Thanks |

Possibly mistranscribed. If you want to give us the name, date and place of birth we can have a look for you. |

I have lots of different families missing in 1861, but am pleased to say that I've found one today- after much searching, so it is possible. Just keep on. nell |

Thanks for your suggestions! I hope I am not jumping to conclusions but I think I may have solved the mystery. I think the 1861 census has been mis- transcribed. I have managed to see the original entry that you found Penelope and where it has been transcribed as Surrey/Sussex Hanwell - I think it actually says Sussex Flimwell which is in the same area as Ticehurst. I am guessing the next bit but even though he his down as a gardener I wonder if he might have been in Maidstone to train as a policeman as that is where the headquarters are for Kent Police and he was a policeman in Tonbridge, Kent in subsequent censuses. |

Have you contacted the relevant area for police archives? I was able to get a transcription of a g-great-uncle's service record by contacting the Surrey Police Museum and the City of London Archives. Hampshire Police history stuff is at the Records Office in Winchester. The records, like those for seamen, give a physical description, too, so it's worth the effort. Christine |
