Thank you for your comments. Durham records are pretty dodgy on ancestry - or I'm too new at this. If I put in his whole name in deaths I get 1 result. If I put in just the surname he doesn't show up !! What on earth to try next? Anne |

I have several where it says 'mariners wife'. This is understandable because if a man was on the seas he was definitely out of the picture so far as census were concerned (although I know some are shown if they are on fishing boats etc). Perhaps your lady wasnt sure what to put. I think if he were just on shift that time if it were me, Id have added him to the return, but may be she was confused what to do? |

Anne women, especially if their husband's weren't home on census night, put their husband's occupation and add on wife. I've got a railway labourer's wife in 1851 no mention of husband 1841, though she is married with a child, and the wretched man died in 1858. I suppose he might have been working in the pit. There are lots of websites about coalmining, but whether there are still lists of who was working where on a particular night, I don't know. I do know that my husband's Welsh lot had a choice of umpteen mines in their valley and I can't be certain of which ones they worked in. nell |

On 1861 census I have a female as Head but married and in occupation column it says 'coal miners wife'. Can I assume he was on back shift that evening? If so, were records made at a coal mine - and where would I look if that did happen? Any thoughts will be welcome. Anne |
