Hi everyone, Does anyone know - Is there any way of finding out if someone joined the Catholic Church as a nun in Australia? Online preferably.

I doubt you will find the names online but if you put Womens religious oreders + Australia in your search engine you may get an idea or which orders have communities in Australia. If the person you are asking about is dead, you may find that the order will resond if you write....if the person lived a long time ago, orders do keep excellent archives and are ehlpful. If the person is living...different matter.Good luck Joan

I just found this request, so hope the question is still relevant. You can access Catholic nuns records for Australia online at www.stbedes.melb.catholic.edu.au/home/br/ They have the database in access format. You have to download it first. They have nuns from 1838 to 1913. The first few are not in any order, but then they are in surname alphabetical order. Surname before entering the convent. There is where they entered what year, date of birth, parents names, religious name and order, and date of death. Also look in the 'notes' on the far right. Interesting little bits sometimes. Hope that helps. I'm happy to look up for you if you give me some info. Libby.

Thank you Joan & Libby, A friend of mine has lost trace of a relation somewhere back in their family tree and there was talk of her entering the Catholic Church as a nun in Australia - Sorry I don't have any details but your suggestions will be most helpful - I will pass on these on to my friend at work. Thank you - Keep smiling, James :-)

The database is large so if your friend doesn't have broadband it will take a while to download. I'm happy to look up for you if preferred. Will need a name and approx date or date of birth. Answer on my name so I realize you want it.Libby
