Can anyone tell me please why a name is not listed on the Birth Index for England. There is just one entry on Genes which exactly matches my birth name (I was adopted and am not listed on GR) but the birth year is 1930 and the place of birth West Sussex which is not me as I was born in 1951. Out of curiosity I contacted the tree holder but was met with a rather icy response, perhaps I was a bit vague but I did only ask to see a tiny part of the tree which was around this person. I know a fair bit about my birth family, they don't know about me, and I just wanted to see if there was any connection as I have the same name. Anyway, to cut a long story short, I can find my own entry on Ancestry Births easily enough but the person listed on GR, with the same name and born 1930 as above does not. exist as far as I can tell. This has now made me even more curious. I've looked in the years either side of 1930 but no luck. Any clues please ?.

Details on GR are only what people submit, my cousin has put her own Grandmothers surname down using her married name not her correct maiden name and my husbands own Gr Grandfather is down as a name he preferred to be called by, not the Actual birth name given or come to that his correct birth year, when he died the informant got his age wrong by 11 years, the informant was a son? I myself though my own grandmother was 2 years younger then she was, until I looked for her on the 1901, that really came as a surprise!, so people may think they know things without looking up BMD's but they don't always know exactly. There are 37 Mickey Mouse's on GR but I doubt that they exist either :-)

my Nan was always known as Maud Edith, it wasn't until I started doing my tree that I found out she was actually Edith Maud. But I've left her as Maud Edith in my tree as thats how I knew my nan and Edith didn't look right

Hi Christine You will be listed in the BMD index, but only under your birth name, not your adopted name. Your adoption would result in a new short certificate being issued after your adoption was legally completed, but that entry will not be in the bmd index. It's a certificate of adoption, but looks just the same as a short birth certificate. I am not listed under Glen Jones but under Philip Andrew L**Y. The Glen bit only comes in 11 months later, and to obtain that cert needs some additional info over and above a 'normal' certificate application, but anyone could apply for my birth cert which of course is Philip Andrew. Years from now anyone looking will ask why no marriage or death for Philip Andrew, and the answer is basically there is no other entries that could be made as Philip Andrew no longer exists. Sometimes a birth entry did get missed from the GRO index, perhaps that has happened with this other entry you can't find, and Ancestry does have some missing pages. After re-reading your message i realise you probably knew this anyhow. Glen
