As people tended to live near as poss to their place of work I think it is a good bet he was working at the railways. You may well be able to find his apprenticeship details somewhere.

Pam an Engine Fitter could have worked anywhere an engine was used, Mines, Railways, Ship yards all the possibles you thought of. If you want help trying to find him in 1901 post some details. Georgina.

My GG Uncle is described on the 1891 census as an 'Apprentice fitter', and on his marriage certificate in 1896 as an 'Engine fitter'. I have looked it up and it seems to point towards mining, but he lived in the centre of Cardiff, I have considered the railway as he did live next to Cardiff Central Station, and also shipping as he was not far from Cardiff docks which may be the reason why I am not able to find him on the 1901 census, can anyone help please, many thanks Pam
