I am stuck, has anyone any suggestions as to what to do next. My ancestor Thomas cocking was born in 1814( I don't know where and that is what I am trying to find out) and died on the 8th March 1871 in Ormskirk, Lancahire. In 1841 census he was living in Ormskirk married to Margaret Nuttall, no place of birth is given. In the 1851 census he was living in Ormskirk married to Margaret Nuttall, and his place of birth is shown as Elswick, Fylde, Lancashire. In the 1861 census his place of birth is shown as Elswick, Yorkshire. Until I can trace details of his birth, I cant trace his parents. All suggestion welcome. Charles Graham Cocking

According to Genuki, there is an Elswick in Lancs and one in Northumberland, but not one in Yorkshire. Therefore I would go with the one in Lancs, as that is what was on the 1851 census for him. The 1841 should at least tell you whether he was born ''in county'' (i.e. Lancs) or not? You'd probably need to go to the Lancs Records Office and check through the parish registers for his baptism - Elswick Lancs isn't on the IGI, apart from a few non-conformist records which don't cover your required date range in any case. Richard Thank you for that, the 1841 census does say he was born in Lancashire, so I will try the Lancashire records office. Regards Charles Graham Cocking
