It could be the rest of the family or at least some of them are also in a workhouse somehwere just described by intials only? People went into workhouses for different reasons, financial, sickness, homelessness, single mthers etc. Suzanne |

The majority of inmates were there because they chose to be there. People imagine the workhouse to be a sort of prison but inmates could more or less come and go as they pleased. An excellent website on the subject is www(dot)institutions(dot)org(dot)uk/workhouses/index(dot)html |

I have traced my gt.grandfather in the census's from 1851 in Worcester to 1891 in Manchester. His name is Joseph Parsons born about 1842 in Worcester. In 1881 he is living in Gorton, Lancashire with his wife Elizabeth and 7 children. I have been looking for months for them in the 1891 but couldn't find them. I have now found Joseph in a work house in Chorlton Lancashire in 1891, but there isn't any family with him, and I can't find them anywhere on the census. My question is, what happens to the family when the man goes into the work house. They must have been somewhere. Joseph dies later that year and I have his death certificate, but he wasn't in the work house when he died. In 1901 I can find the rest of the family again living in South Manchester Widow Elizabeth 1848 b Manchester Daughter Letitia 1872 b Bolton Son Thomas 1882 b Manchester Son Charles 1885 b Manchester Has anyone else had ancestors in the workhouse in similar circumstances and why are people sent there in the first place. If anyone could enlighten me I would appreciate it. Thankyou |
