I was born and raised in Hanham and was just wondering if the entry was Bathford which is a district of Bath. Incidently we had Marshes as neighbours.

Linda I believe events have to be registered in the district in which they occurred. nell

Several thinks come to mind...... Firstly it was not compulsory to register a death until 1875. Secondly the person with the Basford index entry could be any age as it's not on the index. If it was me, I would apply to the Notts Reg Office and ask if they will look at the age and occupation on their death cert (rather than asking the GRO who will charge you if it's the wrong cert) If the cert isn't your chap, then apply to the local Reg office to the burial and ask them if they have a death reg that maybe hasn't made it to the GRO indexing system? if they don't have one, then you may have to assume his death wasn't registered......Though I have to say I have never found an adult not registered....only ever chidren. Can you find another Samuel Marsh of the same age on 1861 census who could be the chap who died in 1863? I do know that in 1917 my great-grandfather whose death was registered in Finchley, North London, where he was living with his youngest son, was taken back for burial to the Norfolk churchyard where his wife had been buried 9 years earlier. nell

Would I be right in thinking that a death does not have to be registered in the district where it happened? I have births registered in other districts. My ancestors were navvies and travelled extensively. e.g. My great grandmother was born in Southampton, but her birth was registered in Wrexham (the Southampton details are written on the certificate) Lx

It doesnt seem right having his death registered there. I have one ancestor on my tree that I have found the burial for and got a copy of the entry in the parish rgisters in 1853, he was born lived and died in the sme town all his life and have never been able to find a death indexed in the GRO! Do you know of any family he may of had in the Basord district? Suzanne

Have you got any of the remaining family living in Nottingham on the 871 census? Suzanne

From FamilyHistoryOnline I have a burial entry for Samuel MARSH 4 Feb 1863 in Hanham, Bristol and his age is given as 56, making his birthyear about 1807 The only death I can find on the March quarter 1863 index was registered at Basford which I believe is in Nottinghamshire. I have him on the 1861 census living in Hanham with wife and children and this gives his birth year as 1806 (close enough) Is it possible that he died in Nottinghamshire and his death was registered there, but he was then buried back home in Hanham, Bristol. On the 1861 census he is listed as being a fireman. Is there any way of finding out for sure.
