Hi Debbie Thanks for your ideas on the Cardiff Library. I havn't got any contacts in Cardiff yet, but in theory I should have a few hundred rellies named Jones most of them named John so I just have to track them down and every thing will be okey dokey. Cheers John from Balmain Sydney |

Try googling for the Glamorgan family history Society they may have the info you need. There were lots of Docks in Cardiff at the time because of all the coal exports etc. There was a potato plant near the docks in which many Irish immmigrants came over and worked at, so I imagine quite a cosmopolitan and busy place..... Hi Nell Yes, I have googled my little heart out on Cardiff/harbourmaster/Benjamin Jones and could not get any real information as to what they did around the turn of the century. I am just trying to get a bit of background of the Jones family at that time, as from what my late Grandmother Gwenllian told me when I was a young boy (some time back now) that her father being the Harbournaster was a big thing to her and the family. Regards John from Balmain Sydney |

Are there any seafarin' types out there that know what a Harbour Masters duties in Cardiff about 1890-1900 might have been. I assumed that my g grandfather Benjamin Jones was the Harbour master for the port of Cardiff as shown on census occupation. but I have come across other berthing or harbour masters just by chance in the census material. Did they have one for each dock at Cardiff? or even a more common function ie just helping boats dock? My late gran Gwenllian said he was THE harbour master. I know this is a bit off the Tips Board plot but I havn't got any definite info from googling and a blank wall from the Port Authority and there is always lots of collective wisdom on Tips John from Balmain Sydney |
