I'm trying to find out if my G Grandad was serving in the forces when the 1881 census was done. He doesn't show on either the 1871 or 1881 census reports and I wondered if it was possibly because he was maybe abroad at the time, that would explain the 1881 disappearance, but I don't know were to look for the 1871 census. His name must have been mistranscribed but god only knows to what - I've tried putting in just the surname but there aren't any other names that come up for his year of birth or area. Is there any way other than from a census sheet to find out where he was?? Amy ideas or info most gratefully received. Thankyou |

What was his name, and year and place of birth? I'll have a look tomorrow - although if ancestry haven't fixed the 1881 I may not get very far! By the way, what war? Kate. |

Hi, My great great grandfather doesn't appear on any of the censuses after 1841 and it turned out that he was in the army, I discovered it by total accident. At one point, he was in scotland, so you could always try there. Lynn |

Try putting in his first name (not surname) plus all the other details you have about him. |

What concrete information about him do you have? Any idea which county he was born in? Occupation from certificates? Does he have a very common name - if not,you could try a search on The National Archives website. |
