Many thanks for the replies, matildas age is a mystery on the 1881 census she is 58 but on her marriage cert, 1852, she is 25. so these could be her. No, cannot find her on 1851 census

Just out of interest have you seen this Matilda on the 1851 census? Have you checked the image on 1861 to check that matildas age tallies with marriage cert? This Matilda is def down as being 16. thanks. What threw me is that joseph and mary did'nt marry until 1823 then had matilda in 24, but by 1830 he had remarried and had another child

Lynda 1841 census enumerators were supposed to round DOWN adults' ages to the nearest 5 years, which is why so many of them are either ages ending -0 or -5. In my family I've found most enumerators couldn't be fagged, so the ages are right. BUT in your case the first Joseph you've found could be up to 5 years older, so its possible he's the right one. nell

I am still looking for matilda Latham born birmingham 1824 to Joseph and Mary. I cannot find Matilda on either the 1814-1851 census. she appears again in 1861 as Matilda Lacey married to Joseph, wed in 1852.On the marriage certificate her father is down as a gun polisher. Below are two Joseph Latham's from the 1841 census. Who, if either, do you think is her Father. 1st Joseph right profession, but a bit young. 2nd Joseph no profession, but a bit too old? Moland St, Birmingham Joseph Latham 35 Gunlock Polisher Elizabeth do 30 Pearl button mkr Joseph do 10 Brass foundry Elizabeth do 5 Charlotte do 5 William do 3 All born in county Bromsgrove St,1,Joseph Latham,68,,Labourer,WAR, ,,Mary Latham,,64,,Not in county
